Let’s face it. There’s nothing like acne to kill your vibe. Luckily, I’ve found 4 supplements that helped me achieve clear, and glowing skin from the inside, without antibiotics or harsh chemicals.
Throughout most of my teen years, I had great skin. My grandma would often tell me I had “porcelain” skin. Around my junior year of high school, it became problematic and my problematic skin followed me into college.
I took all sorts of antibiotics and eventually low doses of Accutane. Yes, these things all helped, but my breakouts never went away completely. I managed with topical prescriptions after that.
Fast forward a few years and I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and co-infections. I was prescribed more antibiotics. After 1.5 years of antibiotics, my gut health was a mess, my liver enzymes were high and my skin was acting up again. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that my internal issues were affecting my skin.
At this time, I was experimenting with healing my body holistically and took notice of how clear my skin looked after taking certain supplements or detoxes. I made note of how each supplement affected my body and my skin.
Today I’m sharing the 4 natural supplements that helped me achieve clear and glowing skin, without antibiotics or topical chemicals.
According to Body Ecology, “beautiful skin begins with a healthy population of gut bacteria.” Reduce inflammation outside by balancing your gut bacteria inside.
I am not a doctor but I personally noticed how quickly some of my breakouts cleared up when I started healing my gut. I’ve used many probiotics over the years but Floratrex probiotics in particular made a noticable differece in my skin clarity.
A deficiency in Zinc is linked to all sorts of health issues including skin related. Zinc is naturally antibacterial and said to be helpful in preventing acne (source). Please note, Zinc can make you nauseous when taking on an empty stomach. My favorite brand is Thorne Research.
3. Black Currant Seed Oil
Black currant seed oil has immune-boosting and anti-inflammatory properties. It contains gamma-linolenic acid, a type of Omega 6 fatty acid that is said to reduce inflammation (source). My favorite brand is NOW.
4. Liver Cleanse
Our liver has many responsibilities including hormone regulation. When it’s stressed it can do a poor job of regulating hormones (source). Hormones are linked to skin issues like acne. This Thorne Research Liver Cleanse supplement contains ingredients like Dandelion Root and Milk Thistle to help to support liver detoxification.
Suffering from acne and breakouts can be stressful. I’ve found the western medicine route, can be helpful but doesn’t get to the route of the problem. I am not a doctor, just a passionate holistic health advocate sharing the information I found on my own wellness journey. These 4 supplements have helped me tremendously with not only clearing my skin but keeping it clear.
It’s important to check with a doctor before incorporating new supplements into your routine.
